TV Shows Now On UK iTunes

By Ollie Parsley in Apple on August 31 2007

Finally! I have been waiting so long for this. After reading so many US blogs over the past year or so talking about TV programmes from iTunes I am happy to say that the UK store now has “TV Programmes”.

iTunes TV Shows

I have a had a quick look at the line up and there are some big names like South Park, Lost and Ugly Betty.

They are all priced at £1.89. I am happy that I foinally have a proper place to download TV shows. Channel 4, ITV and Sky have their services but they are with rubbish attempts at making a web page look like a software application or really bad flash apps (Sky Anything). Plus I get all my msuic from the same store.

Maybe this will go well with the new fat iPod Nano??

MySpace Bullies Killed Another Startup

By Ollie Parsley in General, MySpace on August 30 2007

TellThem is/was a service that lets you message all your friends from your mobile phone.

Anyway, those bullies at MySpace have been at it again killing off another promising start up and killing the hopes of another web developer. Last night they had a call threatening legal action against them.

TellThem’s site simply reads:

On Wednesday August 29th, 2007, we got a call from MySpace threatning to take legal action if we didn’t take the website down. Apparently it violates their terms of service…. switch to Facebook.

So MySapce are asking developers to make applications for thir competitor?? TellThem is only one in a long line of startups getting bullied by MySpace. Previously they killed DatingAnyone, SingleStatus, copied RealEditor and stalled all widgets.

With their rumour Developer Platform coming in soon it seems odd that they are screwing these small startup over.  But if they can make this work with facebookI would be more interested in using it. They also plan to move on to Bebo as well.

Update from TechCrunch: MySpace’s complaint centered around TellThem serving as a proxy for logging into people’s MySpace accounts. The concern is that services like this could be phishing sites collecting credentials for malicious use. Jason Cox, of TellThem said collecting the credentials was necessary because there is no API for accessing the messaging functionality they use. This was not the case for Jason’s last MySpace related startup, BuddyWave.

By Ollie Parsley in General on August 30 2007

Maps Amung Us

I love Whos.Amung.us. I have it integrated into all my sites and also have the firefox plugin. Now they have introduced their latest tool. Live maps.

All you do if fill in a very quick ajaxed form. In the form you choose the size, map style, pin style and pin colour. then you get your embed code. Then embed it somewhere!

I really want to know how they are sourcing the mapping? Is it a bespoke mapping tool. Do you know? Comment it here!

Oh and don’t forget to check out some of their UI improvements!

Kontactr - Free Personal Secure Contact Forms

By Ollie Parsley in General on August 30 2007

I have seen Kontactr around on lots of blogs I visit including my fellow technology blog GotChance. After a recent e-mail conversation with Hari from GotChance he introduced me to Kontactr. After that I thought I would dive in and have a look. With the possibility of adding it to TechJuicer!

First of all the integration could not be simpler. All you do is fill in 6 fields when you sign up. Then choose which code you wish to use.

Then you paste the code onto your site. It is so simple a monkey (who owns a site) could do it!

I have included it below if you want to test it. Plus after looking at it I have integrated it into the TechJuicer contact page.

If you want the form o integrate into your site better, choose the Ajax beta. Ajax allows the form to be sent without refreshing the page. www.api4rss.com is built in a very similar way. Where you fill in the form but the page does not refresh.

Oh and not to forget it is secure! Integrated into the form is image verification. You need to typethe text that is on the image in order to send the message.

Have a look at the contact form below. Plus it is now on the contact page!

BananaScreen - Facial Recognition For Windows Login

By Ollie Parsley in General on August 26 2007

Log Into Windows Using Facial Recognition SoftwareWouldn’t it be fun to have facial recognition instead of logging in? Sounds like its in the future. But wait!

How cool is this? The software lets you login to your computer using facial recognition software. All you need to use the software is a PC and a webcam. BanananScreen will lock your computer when you move away from it, and, when you return, BananaScreen unlocks the PC in less time than it would take you to enter a password.

It uses your webcam to cech against a predefined scan of your face. This comparison takes a second or less depending on the quality of the webcam etc.

To use BananaScreen, there are 3 easy steps: download the software, create your face model, then login! Currently, BananaScreen works on Windows 2000 and XP. Vista support is not guaranteed at the moment, but daring users are reporting that it works for them.
