Askimet Stopped 2 Billion Spam Comments

askimet title

If you have a blog and get alot of spam you want Askimet. If you have a WordPress blog you will probably have this already as it comes with the latest versions. If you do have it and know what it is, like me you know it was a god send. I had it deactivated til the number of spam comments i was deleting was in double figures. Then I activated the plugin.

How many spam comments have got through in 2 months?

NONE

Thats right none at all. It’s a total god send. Their spamming scan system and massive database of comments classed as spam has lead them to be one of the top, if not the top spam comment blocker there is.

The news on their blog today was that they have stopped their 2 Billionth spam comment! Now that is a hell of a lot. Looking at the graph they have produced with their live stats (this is a screen capture so not live). But the stats are impressive.

Askimet Graph

But one thing puzzles me the graph is going up, why? I came up with 2 reasons.

  1. The ammount of spam going around is increasing
  2. Askimet’s spam rules are getting better and better

What do you think? I sat and thought it could quite possibly be both. With the ammount of spam they are stopping their rules should be getting better and better. But also is there more spam around? Well it will always be here. So bound to increase, but increase that much?

Well my personal conclusion is that both of them combine to create the very impressive stats they have! Well done to them. I will not be going to anyone else in a hurry!
