WeoGeo - Mapping The World
Now WeoGeo is no ordinary Google Maps rip. To me it sounded like that anyway. But I only read the name and a few sentences somewhere. The fact is they couldn’t be more different. This is what WeoGeo say about themselves.
WeoGeo is more than a program. It’s built on a vision to map the world. With the help of Amazon’s breakthrough EC2 and S3 services, WeoGeo creates a one-stop marketplace for mapping. It supplies surveyors, engineers, cartographers, and scientists with the ability to conveniently store, search, and exchange high-resolution CAD and GIS mapping products. Mappers easily list their data for sale. Researchers quickly find the data they need.
When you mention GIS I immediately think of MapInfo as I use it at work all the time. The problem we have is the limited range of resources for us to use. We also digitise and create our own GIS layers and data. This data could come in really useful for anyone.
So now we have a place where we can exchange data and possibly even make a bit of money from the hard work we have put in. Also WeoGeo says
In the end, mapping serves one important function to us all: Knowledge of the world around us. By making this knowledge more accessible, more marketable, and ultimately more widespread, WeoGeo has the capacity to create a culture of geographic awareness.
So how do you find data?
Well thats all summarised in this image from their front page. You can go by, geography, price, projection and even more filters.

Their seller site is in private beta at the moment so i’m going to assume that not much selling is going on at the moment. But check back soon for an update. Why not subscribe to our RSS feed.

Hi Ollie,
Thanks for the nice write-up on WeoGeo!
Exactly as you said, the goal of WeoGeo is to help content producers such as yourself to market their products. We want to make it easy for you to share and monetize the results of your hard work. WeoGeo removes the barriers to entry for sellers and makes search and discovery of data products as easy as possible for the buyer.
We are launching the seller site at O’Reilly’s Where2.0 conference in San Jose tomorrow (I’m writing this at the airport) so check back soon!
